Newsies Musical Comes to SHP

  • Nicholas Zamboldi ’23

Newsies, coming to Sacred Heart March 20th, is a musical based on the real-life newsboy strike of 1899. It centers around newsboy Jack Kelly (Bennett Kruse ‘21) who unites a group of “newsies” to face the Pulitzer publishing company which is paying them poorly for their work. They go on strike and eventually Joseph Pulitzer is forced to pay the newsies fairly. The play is a musical comedy which will feature much singing and dancing, in addition to many comedic moments mainly deriving from the interactions between Kelly and his misfit newsies. I

n the real-life newsboy strike, similar to the play, New York City newsies created an informal union and went on strike to protest their unfair pay. Director Jeffery Adams explains, “It is a story about young people trying to make social change.” This applies to SHP students because it is inspirational and proves that we can take action on issues we care about. The play will include actors from the Prep as well as the lower school and will feature the SHP dance team. Adams chose the play because of its flexibility in cast member age and the messages it sends about the ability of younger generations to create positive change.

The theater department is trying to replicate as much of the choreography and set design from the Broadway musical as possible. The 60-student cast is well into rehearsals and will perform 4 times over March 20th, 21st, and 22nd. Tickets are now available.
